Perfect Fit

Buying a new bra? It is imperative — both, for health and good form — that you choose one that fits perfectly. Here’s your guide to choosing the right bra...

Most women keep buying the same sized bra for years without taking into account even slight variations in weight. Actually, you must measure yourself every time you go to buy one.

Your bra is too small if: The shoulder straps cut into your shoulders; the breast tissue is not fully contained in the cup of the bra and appears under the straps, side panels and over the top of the cups; or the under-band cuts into your body.

Your bra is too big if: It rides up at the back; it shows excess fabric or wrinkles in the cup area; or your breasts lack support.

Select a bra which has: A firm elasticated edge to the cups, a good separation between the cups, and elasticised, adjustable straps to provide comfort and support.

Underwired Styles
Usually, women avoid underwired styles if they’ve had breast surgery, as an ill-fitting bra may be damaging to the breast form. However, if you are used to this type of bra, you can go in for one that fits perfectly. When selecting an underwired style, see that the breast form sits on top of the underwiring and is not squashed underneath it.

Maternity Bras
Select a bra which allows easy access to the breast and with an opening that can be unfastened with one hand. This allows skin-to-skin contact when you nurse your baby. Shop for a maternity bra during the final weeks of your pregnancy, because your breasts will be continually changing as you near your due date.

Avoid a bra that leaves too much room for future growth; it will not give you proper support now.
Choose a bra that fits well now, knowing that you may need to change to another size later on.
Wide, cushioned, non-stretch shoulder straps will provide support without digging into your shoulders.
