Thought staying away from food is the route to a Halle Berry-like body?
Really, what were you thinking! We've got food that'll get you one like Naomi
Campbell's!
Yes,
we all know the score by now: Eating well and looking great go hand in hand. But
did you know that you can target specific problem areas like dry hair or
cellulite by eating certain foods?
A balanced diet is still important because you need various nutrients to keep
different parts of your body at their best, so don't go overboard and snack on
just one thing to excess. Here are five edible ways to get gorgeous...
The
Goal: Strong Hair And Nails
The
Snack Solution: Oily Fish
A
couple of portions of oily fish per week will help keep you hair shiny and your
nails strong. Sardines, salmon and mackerel all contain omega 3 fatty acids,
which are essential for maintenance of your hair, skin and nails, explains
trichologist Dr Rita Khatwani. She also recommends eggs which contain an amino
acid called cysteine, found naturally in hair, nails and skin. White marks or
ridges on your nails could be the result of a zinc deficiency, so up your
intake of red meat and shellfish.
The Goal: Clear Sparkling Eyes
The
Snack Solution: Spinach
When
you've been staring at a computer screen all day, you might feel your eyes
starting to burn. Spinach contains Vitamin C, which reduces inflammation, so it
will help lessen under-eye puffiness. It's also rich in iron, which is needed
for healthy blood. Carrots are also beneficial as they contain beta-carotene,
which your body converts to Vitamin A. Okay so carrots won't make you see in the
dark, but the Vitamin A also acts as an anti-ageing agent.
The
Goal: Beautiful Skin
The
Snack Solution: Fruit Salad With Nuts
If
you're dehydrated, your skin shows it first. Choose fruits high in water content
like grapes and watermelon, as opposed to bananas. A plum is a great low-fat
snack and a pear chopped up into yoghurt makes a nutritious breakfast. Add a
handful of almonds to see extra benefits as they contain fatty acids that keep
the skin plump, along with antioxidant selenium and Vitamin E. You'll often find
Vitamin E in face creams, but it works just as well from within. It protects the
skin from damage and can slow down the ageing process of cells.
The
Goal: Cellulite-Free Bottom
The
Snack Solution: Vegetable Stir Fry
If
your cellulite is a recent arrival, you may be able to get rid of it, or at
least make it less obvious. It's made worse by water retention, so you need to
drink a lot. Think of your body as a loo that needs regular flushing. Green
vegetables like celery and string beans help as they are diuretics (make you
pee). For dinner, have a stir-fry with lots of vegetables like carrots,
asparagus, broccoli, capsicum and peas, but avoid salty sauces like soy sauce.
If you combine changing your diet with exercise, you'll see a difference in a
month.
