Oil Slick
/photo.cms?msid=195116 First, check your products. Oily scalp is usually caused by shampoos that are too strong. Many shampoos contain harsh detergents that strip the hair of its natural oils. The scalp reacts by producing even more oil to protect itself from further irritation. We notice our roots getting oilier, so we wash our hair more frequently. The scalp again responds by increasing oil production, and a vicious cycle emerges. So, use a gentle shampoo to help regulate the oil glands. When you use a conditioner, apply it gently with your fingertips, keeping it only on your ends and avoiding the roots and scalp completely.

Avoid all products containing silicone, oils or lanolin, as well as two-in-one products.

Switch to a plant-based shampoo. All-natural shampoos contain much gentler detergents. They will help rebalance your scalp and decrease oil production. Choose shampoos that are specifically formulated for oily hair.

/photo.cms?msid=195117 Just the way many women combat an oily T-zone but dry cheeks; some women have a hard time with oily scalps and dry hair ends. Dry ends are often the result of over-processing your hair. If you colour, perm or straighten your hair, talk to your stylist about the best way to keep it healthy. Regular deep conditioning treatments at home will help moisturise and smoothen your ends. Applying shea butter or hot oil for an hour a week should work wonders. Use a very moisturising conditioner and leave it in for a couple of minutes after you shampoo.

When it comes time to style, avoid products like mousse that contain alcohol. They will further irritate your scalp and encourage oil production. They are also very drying to your ends. A natural, alcohol-free styling gel will be much gentler on your hair.

Products you can use:
L’Oréal Professionnel Sebo Control Shampoo gently eliminates excess sebum and rebalances greasy scalps.
The Body Shop Ice Blue Revitalising Conditioner (Rs 400) and Shampoo (Rs 350) invigorates oily scalps with peppermint and menthol.
Inecto Peach Shampoo (Rs 200), with botanical extracts and pH balanced to be mild, cleanses and moisturises. Contains natural peach nut oil.
Marks & Spencer Fresh Lemon Shampoo (Rs 310) — Panthenol strikes again, this time in a delicately fragrant shampoo with added conditioners.
Clairol Herbal Essences With Botannical Shine Complex for coloured and damaged hair (Rs 155) — rose hips, vitamin E and jojoba in mountain spring water, replenish, refresh and moisturise coloured hair.

Static And Frizz
/photo.cms?msid=195115 Humidity is often the cause of the frizzies; since there's not much you can do about the weather, use products that contain silicone and try to make the best of it. Still frizzy even when it's not damp outside? You might be handling your hair too much. After you wash your hair, gently squeeze out excess moisture with a towel — never rub! When you blow-dry, use a round natural-bristle brush (after your hair is partially dried), and be sure to dry your hair completely. During the day, don't brush your hair — just use a wide-toothed comb when necessary or, better yet, use your fingers. Silicone serum, styling wax or pommade will also help tame the frizz.

Static electricity is caused by friction — both between your comb and your hair, and between individual hairs. Don't comb too often, and use the highest-level conditioner you can without weighing your hair down; a leave-in conditioner might be right for you.

Frizzy curls are no fun so look for a frizz control balm or activator. A curl activator defines the curls but doesn't make them hard and crunchy when dry. Put a nice sized dollop in your hands and make sure it gets from the roots to the ends. This way it will coat each hair strand and give it definition. Let your hair air dry and then gently loosen the curls with your fingers. These balms are great to let the hair dry by itself. If you blow dry, find a gel to use over the activator that works with the heat. Your curls should look great!

Products you can use:
