Fed Up With Flyaway Hair?
Try this trick: Spray a small
amount of hair spray onto a tissue, then smooth it over your locks — using
a tissue prevents the hair from becoming greasy or full of static, which can
happen with a hands-on approach.
Bedhead Blues
Bad hair days can
be detrimental to a person’s wellbeing, admits psychologist Donna Dawson.
What’s worrying is that more than 70 per cent of British women experience
this problem and feel more self conscious, moody or negative as a result,
according to a survey by L’Oréal. Fortunately, good hair days mean
we feel more positive, confident and attractive to the opposite sex.
According to a Pantene survey, for a lot of women it is that lack of
shine that is distressing. In fact, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type
of depression linked to bad hair days suffered during the hot, humid summer
months.
Know Dandruff From A Dry Scalp!
When you think you have
dandruff, it may actually be a dry scalp. The best way to differentiate between
the two is as follows: If your scalp is dry, you’ll see small powdery
white flakes; if you have dandruff, the flakes are much bigger and are pale
yellow in colour.
Give Hair A Boost
Add some shine to your life
and hair with these tips from Pantene Pro-V:
Have a hearty laugh; it helps
the brain release endorphins to give you a natural high.
Take a risk; treat
new experiences as opportunities to learn rather than occasions to win or
lose.
Find three things that make you feel good — a piece of music,
best holiday snaps or a favourite film.
Let hair dry naturally as
often as possible to prevent damage caused by heat styling.
Rinse the
conditioner off with cold water — it closes the cuticles and helps seal
in moisture.
There’s More To Hair Loss
You can afford to
lose around 80 hairs a day; also, most lost hair is replaced by new hair. Each
hair follicle has its own cycle, so hair loss and regrowth happens at different
times to avoid all your hair falling out at once. However, if you are losing a
lot of your crowning glory, it could be for various reasons. Hair loss is common
after childbirth when hair goes through an extended growth phase or as a result
of hormonal imbalances. Even a lack of regular hair washing can be a cause
— the hair roots get clogged with sebum, and when you shampoo, the area
gets cleared thus forcing the hair out. Stress triggers hair fall, too, so
it’s important to find time to relax and exercise regularly in order to
destress.
The Hair Cycle
Did you know that the rise and fall of
hormones throughout a woman’s menstrual cycle was responsible for bad hair
days? So say experts at Pantene. Research explains that the dominance of either
oestrogen or progesterone through a typical menstrual cycle can cause obvious
changes in the body, which, in turn, have a role to play in making us look and
feel great or gruesome. The chances of suffering bad hair days increase when
progesterone levels are at their highest and oestrogen levels at their lowest.
When progesterone levels increase, the production of mucus (thickening the body
fluids) decreases, thus stimulating the production of sebum. This increased
production and thickening process causes the sebum to congest the scalp to give
you hair that is dull, lifeless and unmanageable, alongside a dry
scalp.

Decreased oestrogen lowers sebum production to leave skin feeling
dry and itchy. It also leads to a reduction of collagen and elastic (the fibres
that give skin its elasticity and firmness), causing changes in your hair, too
— which can become thinner and lose its shine.
Days 12 to 14
are great hair days. You will feel your best; your hair will be shiny, making
you feel extra sociable and confident.
City Hair
Pollution not
only affects skin, but your hair, too. Experts say cigarette smoke is the
biggest culprit, giving hair a yellow tinge. What’s more, highlighted,
coloured and grey hair suffer a lot because the hair is more porous. To deal
with the problem, coat your hair with a serum to prevent pollutants entering the
hair shaft. And if you smoke, give up now.
Magnetise It!
For
centuries the Chinese have believed that magnets can have a remarkable effect on
hair growth, making it thicker and healthier. Try magnetotherapy to test this
theory.
Hair Is Big!
To give hair volume, apply body-building
products like mousse close to the hair roots for maximum effect. But if you do
that with your conditioner, you will end up with limp hair.
Also,
you needn’t wear rich accessories in your hair; try using fresh flowers,
ribbons, silk scraves or fabric
off-cuts.
