BLUE CROSS OF INDIA

The Blue Cross of India is now one of India’s largest and
most active animal welfare organisations. It’s areas of work include
shelters, rehoming, adoption, hospitals, mobile dispensaries and ambulance
services.
* Be an adoption counsellor: Staff the adoption centres at
Guindy and Adyar, Madras, screen and counsel prospective adopters. Educate the
public on topics like proper pet care, the importance of spaying and neutering
and animal behaviour.
* Dog walker: Fill a shelter canine’s
day with love and exercise by taking him for walks.
* Pet
socialiser: Create a home-like environment for the Blue Cross animals. Play
with, pet, brush and talk to the animals.
* Assist veterinary staff
with animals recovering in the Spay/Neuter Clinic.
* Help organise
the Blue Cross special events.
*Staff information booths at fairs
and community events
* Offer clerical support services.
* Be a foster parent. You can provide a temporary home (usually
three to four weeks) for animals who are sick or injured or too young to be
adopted. Volunteers can provide loving care until the pet can be placed in a
permanent home; the Blue Cross provides for the animals’ medical needs.
* Contribute your special skills: Photo-graphy, writing and artwork.

BHUMI
Aims to learn about and
serve developing communities around the world. It was created in 1996 by a group
of undergrads at Harvard University, the US, to raise awareness about issues
such as natural resource management, human rights and environmental activism in
different areas of the world.
Partner organisations: Madras
Crocodile Bank. Focuses on conservation and research on endangered species. It
has participated in the captive breeding of endangered species, set up a
conservation and research base in the Andaman Islands, and created a gene pool
of 14 species of crocodiles. Interns work on designing and preparing education
materials.
