Bread is now hanging its crusts in shame as the culprit for adding inches to
our waistlines. White bread, buns, rolls and croissants are all in the hall of
food baddies, according to researchers at Tufts University in Boston. The men in
white coats monitored 500 people's eating habits for three years and found that
those who indulged in white bread and other highly refined grains had the
fastest growing stomachs.
But
why is white bread so bad?
As
the refined grains of white bread enter the body they are quickly converted into
sugar. This makes insulin levels rise in an effort to remove the sugars from our
blood and store them in cells. Unfortunately the cells that store them happen to
be in our abdominal area.
Before
you banish toast and rolls, it's only white bread that's bad for bellies. Eating
wholegrain bread is very good for you, so all you need to do is swap white for
brown.
In
fact, a diet rich in wholegrains has been shown to reduce the risk of type 2
diabetes and lower the incidence of some cancers and heart disease.

Grow
your own facelift
The
days of injecting foreign bovine products (botox) into our faces in the
relentless pursuit of youth and beauty may soon be over, thanks to a new
technology called Isolagen. This new process involves growing your own facelift.
Yes, those clever specialists have managed to harvest a patient's own
collagen-producing cells and re-inject them back into their face. However, those
wanting an instant facelift will need to grow some patience. The Isolagen lift
does not give the immediate 'plumping' that comes with injecting synthetic
fillers.
You'll
have to wait a good month to see the first signs of youthful looking skin and
optimum effects may not be achieved until a whole year's worth of
injections.
Strangely,
despite the length of time taken with the procedure, the harvested cells remain
the same age as when they were removed from the skin. So no matter how long the
procedure takes, the injected cells will be younger than you.
Brit
Women Can't Live Without Concealer

Brit women love make-up and new research reveals that nearly one third of them
won't leave the house without fully applied make-up. According to a survey of
more than 1,000 women by skin care experts Anne French, one fifth of women
believe that lipstick is the most essential item in a make-up bag. However, 19
per cent of 16 to 24-year-olds couldn't face the world without their
concealer.
The
survey also uncovered some worrying facts. Less than a quarter of women said
they cleansed their skin twice a day and (a frankly disgusting) 15 per cent say
they never cleanse their face at all!
Finally,
only 15 per cent give their skin a rest by going without make-up once a week.
Tsk Tsk! Leaving your face bare will encourage a healthy complexion and enable
those pores to breathe, ladies!
Stop Biting Your Nails
Nail
biters beware! Russian scientists believe people who constantly bite their
fingernails are more at risk from lead poisoning. The researchers found that
lead in the body accumulates in the nails and can lead to illness in people who
are constantly nibbling.
Children
are more at risk and could have problems with their development, say the
scientists. All is not lost though, the danger can be reduced through the
consumption of milk and vitamins.
